So it wasn't until last month's Western States Open that I got to play an authentic Bird's Opening against IM Ed Formanek. I don't disagree that Marin's A Spanish Repertoire for Black and Beating the Open Games are good books. Did Marin think he knew it all and didn't need to consult these sources? Instead our subsequent games (when he had White) went 1. E4 e5, and he almost always won. Grandmaster Repertoire 13 – The Open Spanish provides a complete repertoire for Black after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4. As many readers know, I have been a long-time advocate of the Bird Variation of the Ruy Lopez for Black (1. Marin didn't consult any other 1 e4 e5 repertoire books like The Ruy Lopez: A Guide for Black, Play 1 e4 e5, The Chess Advantage in Black and White, Play the Open Games as Black, etc, or Chesspublishing.com! The one big complaint that I have about the books is Marin's bibliography. He beat me in very instructive fashion, and in the process gave me some idea how White can get into trouble.
